As I sit here digging into some leftover Halloween candy, I found myself thinking about a post I’d read a few days ago. The main gist of the post was that as you go through life, you find people that love you and love being around you, and there are others that you will find to be well…the opposite. As crazy as it may sound, I suppose it is true. You aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. It makes me think about what kind of person I am. I make friends with people very easily and can mold myself into most any group, but maybe there’s people who find me not to be as awesome as I think I am. Either way, it’s okay. While everyone wants to be liked (including myself), it’s not the most important thing in this life. The most important thing is that you are always true to yourself.
Which brings me to my point. Just be you.
Today’s world is more connected than ever what with our phones and computers and all, so it’s easier than ever to find and copy aspects of other people’s lives. Isn’t that what we like most about bloggers? Or at least lifestyle bloggers? We love getting to see how wonderful and exciting their daily lives are – or at least how perfect they seem to be behind the lens. We see what they wear and try to copy it, we see how they decorate their homes and try to copy it, we see their vacations and try to copy them. Because maybe, just maybe, if we buy the same things we will have a life just as wonderful as theirs. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with drawing bits of inspiration from others, and using it to try new things. The trouble is, we lose ourselves in the effort of trying to draw inspiration. Soon, we try to become someone we are not in the hopes of becoming someone people will like, someone people will admire, someone people will look up to.
We can be all of this without any of that. I believe the purpose of our lives is to uncover what the purpose of our lives is. What I mean by this is that until we discover and come to love and accept who we truly are, we cannot uncover what we are meant to do in this life. We are all originals, each one of us is unique and beautiful and special. Each of us have skills and talents to give to the world. I will be the first to admit that I sometimes look to others for inspiration. I figure too, that surely if I try to live the way they live and buy the things they buy, that I will become this amazing person like them. How silly of me. Aren’t I an original also? Aren’t you? Aren’t we all?
If we give into ourselves and just simply be who we are, buy the things we want, go where we want to go, and do what we want to do – we too will become someone the world looks at, someone people want to look up to.
Have a wonderful weekend!
